The exhibition, Pictures of People: Contemporary Portrait Photography, will be held at the Visual Arts Center, TCC at Olde Towne, Portsmouth, Virginia, from July 12 through August 27, 2009. The Artist's Reception wil take place on Saturday, July 11 at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Pictures of People features work by 10 emerging and established photographers including: Jan Casper (Virginia Beach, VA); Angélica Muñoz Castaño (Hackensack, NJ); Matthew Clowney (Providence, RI); Morgan M. Ford (Plano, TX); Anne Leighton Massoni (Asbury Park, NJ); Sandra Matthews (Northampton, MA); Glen McClure (Norfolk, VA); Colleen Mullins (Minneapolis, MN); Jacinda Russell (Muncie, IN); and Gordon Stettinius (Manakin Sabot, VA).

In distinctly different ways, works in the exhibition represent the diversity of early 21st century portrait photography. Themes explored include family dynamics, the passage of time, friendship and the impact of the fashion industry on self-image. Roller derby girls, Colombian farm workers, goth culture and the elite at play are among the subjects presented in the exhibiton.

Pictures of People gives viewers an opportunity to experience a range of photographic styles and approaches. Images represent a variety of imaging media in both black and white and color; some are highly manipulated. The scale ranges in size from small and intimate to quite large.
